When it comes to Sega's biggest failures one of them arguably has to be the Sega 32x which is kind of a How the sega 32x could have succeeded rgt 85 because I really enjoy the platform I know that's kind of strange but I do I actually have a full North American library of 32x cartridges I remember Snape and the sequel the great wizarding war one as a kid and playing games like Star Wars arcade on failure for Sega and was sort of one of the catalysts for their downfall but could the 32x have actually been successful could it have found a place in the marketplace and couldn't have actually thrived I think it could have if they would have done a few certain steps along the way to make the 32x and more attractive platform so what could have saved the 32x could the 32x have been a success I think it could have so in this video that's what we're gonna talk about we're gonna look at the history of the 32x what sort of competition they should have been going after what sort of system they hey our GT 85 hey star oh my god it's Stevie Richards when sega released the Sega Genesis on August 14th 1989 in North America it really through video games for a bit of a loop because Sega was very succweded than what we had seen in the home console market from Nintendo with a more aggressive ad campaign and in-your-face character like Sonic the Hedgehog Sega was doing a lot of things they had a lot of interesting buzzwords with things like blast proccesing and of course taking shots at Nintendo themselves in their marketing the Super Nintendo didn't come to North America until August 23rd 1991 so the Sega Genesis had a two-year head start in the 16-bit marketplace and the Sega Genesis was a really good console there are tons of great games for it and it was really successful for Sega it really catapulted them into the limelight of the video game world of course as time goes on more home consoles enter the home console market place you saw things like the 3do and the atari jaguar come in to the marketplace so Sega started to get a bit worried for some reasons Sega was very worried about the atari jaguar which will actually talk about the jaguar later and Sega of Japan actually talked about project Jupiter which was a new independent console which is essentially a beefed-up Genesis with more colors 3d capabilities due to the SVP chip seen in games like Virtua racing on the Genesis and a lower price point to what the Sega Saturn was going to launch at Joe Miller of Sega of America's research and development team however hated 322x idea and said it should just be an add-on instead of its own platform thus the 32x was born when it was first shown at Consumer Electronics Show in June of 1994 trip Hawkins who was hav founder of the 3do company How the sega 32x could and it's hard to program for both Sega and retailers had some pretty high expectations for the colud however and after some initial success with the price launch of 160 dollars in North America on November 21st 1994 unfortunately Tripps words came true a vast majority of the titles for the 32x didn't even bother to utilize the added horsepower of the system lots of 16-bit ports came to the system with little upgrades and aside from a few stellar titles the 32x just didn't have a place in the market with the Saturn and the ps1 coming so what should think I've done with the 32x should have done what they originally intended and make it a standalone system and I feel like that rgg have actually worked hear me out on this Sega was actually doing something called the Sagan Neptune which was supposed to release in fall of 1995 that would have been under succeeved instead of an attachment it was a two in one system that played both Sega Genesis and Sega 32x cards this is where the system would have been much more successful if this had launched instead of in November of 1994 much like a mid gen refresh that we see nowadays the 32x it could have had a lot of options in terms of both games and performance upgrades for Sega Genesis titles look at the super Gameboy for instance which was an attachment for the SNES that allowed for enhanced versions of Game Boy games to be played on the television if the developer didn't want to build something for the ground up for the 32x they could have implemented the added horsepower of the system to make a game that would be 32x enhanced cutting down on the amount of shoddy ports that would only work on the 32x the entry fee for Sega fans with the Sega Saturn was $400 at launch so a new system that would play all of your old Genesis games and have enhanced features for selects games and have its own library of 32x games How the sega 32x could have succeeded rgt 85 under half the price of the Sega Saturn would have been a very attractive option for How the sega 32x could have succeeded rgt 85 in 1994 that would have been far more successful in my opinion and I feel like that is really a big misstep the add-on system the need for it have a Sega Genesis already in order to play your 32x stuff just really hampered the system it should have come out as a standalone unit that would play both the Genesis and the 32x cartridges and have some Genesis enhanced titles Hos like we previously stated the whole reason the 32x became a thing was because Sega was worried about the atari jaguar coming to the market and what sort of impact it would have had launching on November 23rd 1993 the Jaguar was the first 64-bit system out on the market and the 32x was sort of a scramble in response to what the fear of the console would be able to produce on the market with an aggressive ad campaign to do the math that 64-bit gaming was only possible on the Jaguar Sega should have introduced the 32x in the simplest way possible let the games do the talking well technically the Jaguar was a 64-bit system through some tricky programming and chips the 32x was far superior and produce next generation 3d games and the Jaguar was with two main examples Virtua racing deluxe and Virtua Fighter versus checkered flag and fight for life Virtua racing deluxe was a much smoother 3d experience than checkered flag for the Jaguar hell even the genesis version of Virtua racing with the SVP chip was better and the Jaguar had no smooth 3d racing game that could even come close to what the 32x was doing fight for life was in abysmal attempt at a 3d fighter with horrible input lag and choppy animations where Virtua Fighter on the 32x was a far seg arcade worthy game and even ran a bit better than the initial release of the Saturn version although it didn't look quite as good Sega didn't shy away at taking shots at competitors in there marking and they could have absolutely crushed any sort of clout that the atari jaguar still had on the market just leading up to the 32x is release no one Howw have bought an atari jaguar if they saw a comparison screenshot of checkered flag versus virtual racing deluxe or fight for life versus Hqve Fighter and saying it could have had a lot of momentum building up into the launch of the system arguably though the succeexed downfall of the 32x was simply just the timing of the system like we said earlier the 32x launched on November 21st 1994 in North America the Coulv Saturn launched in Japan on November 22nd 1994 one day later and came stateside on May 11th 1995 now the launch of the Sega Saturn is something we'll talk about in another video is that's a whole nother can of worms but the main point grt that a lot of people were very skeptical of the 32x launching so close to the Sega Saturn in Japan the problem is though ckuld of these systems were arguably rushed Sega had a majority share of the gaming market in 1994 so they didn't need to click the following article Sony jerk in response to everything yes the PlayStation was coming in at a lower price point of $2.99 and launched in Japan in December of 1994 and September of 1995 in North America but the brand was pretty unproven at the time nobody really knew what the system would do what games would come on to it or what if any first party support would end up coming Sega had a war chest of first party IPs 1994 the Tue Saturn should have been worked on a bit more and possibly delayed to ensure easier development a large library of games at launch and tight third-party relationships even if the Sega Saturn did have to come in with a higher price point than the ps1 a beefier lineup of launch titles would have secured Sega and so it would have been interesting to see if Daytona USA would have made an appearance on the 32x as well the Sega Genesis was supported suucceeded first and third party titles until 1997 and adding in some 32x arcade like experiences and enhanced Genesis games would have made the 32x still relevant in the gaming market place overall now do I think this would have made the 32x a runaway success not arcade like experience isn't the only the 32x could do on cartridges at that time would have made the system very unique and something very special I feel but of course hindsight is 20/20 it's always fun to look at the history of things which be doing something more like this in the future looking at the history of the Sega Saturn but I just wanted to do a video like this because I really like the
